Winfield Ceramics’bamboo pattern,(produced in many color combinations) as seen in Plate, was introduced in 1937, becoming by far the most successful design, remaining in production until the business closed. More than four hundred separate articles comprised the Winfield line, three hundred of which were designed for use in food preparation and dining. The bottom of this plate has a glossy, clear glaze, underneath it is stamped “HAND CRAFTED Winfield China”with bright blue underglaze. This ink stamp and Winfield China showthatit was manufactured by American Ceramic Products after 1946 in Santa Monica. In 1946, American Ceramic Products of Santa Monica helped Winfield produce their huge backlog of orders after the war. The trade name Winfield, Winfield Ware, and Winfield China was licensed to American Ceramic Products. Whereas, the original Pasadena pottery is marked with Winfield Pasadena, and later Gabriel Pasadena. Winfield Pottery ceased operations in 1962, one of the many victims of inexpensiveforeign imports and the rising popularity of plastic dinnerware. Designer Margaret Mears Gabriel joined Winfield in 1935, fashioning utilitarian items that were favorably received in the shops that already handled the artware. Initially, Winfield produced a set of coupe-style dishes (coupe plates are flat and rimless with a slight concave edge) which provided a blank canvas for her new hand-painted design patterns, including bamboo, tulip, avocado, geranium, and citrus. Between 1936-1941 functional items were greatly expanded with two complete dinnerware designs and about ten decorative patterns. ", "Dedication" : "Gift of Wm.
