Sculpture
Ellice Johnston became an expert in high firingand glaze and clay body blends. Untitled is made of stoneware with grog and stained with iron oxide in a salt firing. Grog is used to add a gritty, rustic texture called "tooth.” It reduces shrinkage and helps prevent cracking. The coarse particles open the green clay body to allow gases to escapewhich is a smart approach for figures with solid rope stretched arms like these. The sailor’s legs and body were thrown on the wheel, and that formwas altered to shapethe head. Arms, bird and sailor hat were attached as the figures were drying.

Assemblage of wood and an oval-shaped basket. Displayed inside the basket are various items including hair, feathers, cloth, and dried flowers hanging downward. Hung around the edges of the basket are dilapidated & plastered doll appendages (arms on upper half and legs on lower half). The sculpture is displayed as a wall hanging with the doll appendages hanging off the sides of the basket which serves as the base. At the bottom of the wooden/basket base is a round mirror fragment and a child's multi-colored, hand-held toy ball.

Painting
Portrait of a woman's head without a face. The face is white and has long, flowing, straight brown hair with straight bangs and hair wrapped around the back of the woman's neck. The brushstrokes are thick and gestural especially in the background of white on top and the brown countertop underneath the woman's head. The woman's head rests on a round, red platform as if she were a mannequin.
