Holding Space

Holding Space highlights historical and contemporary ceramics from the Nora Eccles Harrison Museum of Art (NEHMA) collection, focusing on the vessel as both form and metaphor. NEHMA was founded in 1982 following a monetary gift from Nora Eccles Harrison and a donation of 400 ceramics from her collection. Her practice as a functional potter inspired her to collect ceramics with the vessel form. Over the years, NEHMA’s ceramic collection has expanded to include over 1,300 works, with the vessel at the heart of this acquisitions program.

This exhibition comprises work by sixty-six artists, including John Neely, David Furman, Maria Martinez, Dirk Staschke, and Patti Warashina. We are also excited to share works from a recent gift by the estate of collector Arthur J. Williams, which fills gaps in our collection by adding artists such as Ann Currier, Sylvia Hyman, Tony Marsh, and Brad Schwieger.
