Coyotes are perennial favorites in Indigenous American folklore, sometimes taking the form of a semi-divine creator being, and sometimes cast in the role of trickster. They often feature in narratives connected to the creation of the earth and the discovery of fire, roles which may be reflected in the fiery lines of this ceramic vessel. While Grossman was not of indigenous descent, he spent 35 years as Professor of art at the University of Arizona in Tucson and was well acquainted with southwestern animal life and regional stories.
