Peccavi captures Hess’s style of realism while including symbolic tokens undefined by the surrounding elements. “Peccavi” is an expression of guilt—literally, “I have sinned” in Latin. Peccavi is a product of the artist group The Bastards, in which Hess, John Frame, Steve Galloway, Peter Zokosky, Michael C McMillen and Jon Swihart collaborate to create pieces “without clear parentage,” thus resulting in the group name.
