Photographer Russell Lee is best known for his work for the Farm Security Administration. He traveled across the nation to capture images of the people and places in rural America. While in Utah, Lee concentrated on photographing the trials and the triumphs in the daily lives of farmers. In this scene, he documents a farmer lugging branches of cane to a crusher on a farm in southeastern Utah. Despite his physical exertion, the farmer smiles and focuses his attention at someone or something to his left.
