Sonia Gechtoff

Gechtoff credits her artistic success to the time she spent in the Bay Area, where she was immersed in a creative community of artists, poets, and designers. Though she also found success in New York City, where she was invited to exhibit her work and teach at a number of artistic and academic institutions, she found the bias against female artists in New York City hindered her in achieving the level of success she wanted. As a teenage art student, Gechtoff was inspired by Social Realism, a movement that worked to expose the problems of the working class and poor.
As she progressed in her art education, Gechtoff became an exclusively abstract painter and liked to experiment with different styles of abstraction and methods of painting, such as painting with a palette knife instead of a paintbrush.
