Akio Takamori is well known for his highly expressive ceramic figures that capture moments of humanity and ordinary life. Takamori created multiple collections of figures, standing or sleeping, highlighting everyday moments and memories of his childhood in Japan, as well as contemporary figures in modern political and cultural settings.

Takamori was born in Nobeoka, Miyazaki, Japan in 1950. He attended the Musashino Art College and the University of Tokyo. After moving to the US, he attended the Kansas City Art Institute and Alfred University in New York. Later, he moved to Seattle, Washington, where he taught ceramics at the University of Washington until his death in 2017.
