Russell Lee

American
(1903–1986)

Wife of Mormon farmer with canned goods. Snowville, Utah
1940

Gelatin silver print
14 x 18 in.

The homemaker subject of Lee’s photograph clutches a pair of bottles like talismans against hunger. At the time, Lee was working on a story about Latter-day Saint cooperative farms in northern Utah and many of his photographs feature men working with livestock. This image highlights the woman’s contributions to her family’s physical and economic well-being: preserved foods that she likely also grew herself.
