Oakes became fascinated with Native Americans and subsequently began a long career as an anthropologist. Oakes studied the religion, art, rituals, and stories of Native Americans, particularly the Navajo in the Southwestern United States and the Mam of Guatemala. Oakes is primarily known for her writing about Native American tribes, psychology, and her interactions with psychologist Carl Jung.
