In collaboration with Navajo (Diné) Medicine Man Jeff King, ethnologist Maud Oakes produced a series of silkscreens collectively titled Where the Two Came to Their Father, Earth and Sky after observing a Diné war ceremony during World War II conducted by Jeff King. Oakes then reproduced King’s original sand paintings, which were destroyed after the ceremony. The resulting imag shows the ritual journey of the Diné people referencing the celestial bodies of the sky as seen in the top half of the image. Below, the cluster of dwellings, likely hogans, evoke domesticity and community.
