Hyde graduated from USU in 1962, a decade after Calvin had left the faculty, but his work evidences the lasting impact of Calvin’s teaching on the department. He shared Calvin’s attention to rural life in northern Utah, privileging landscapes over portraits. While Hyde was an accomplished painter, his preferred medium was woodcut printmaking. His distinctive style is indebted to Calvin’s interpretation of modernism, which emphasized expressive colors and gestural lines.
