Up in #2 consists of two white circles on gold and black rectangles. Tension is created where the black and gold squares meet. Hammersley had a similar work in the Four Abstract Classicists exhibition titled Unlike (1959). The use of the two circles and rectangles was a theme he explored consistently throughout his career.

While serving as an Army sergeant in World War II from 1942-45, Hammersley was stationed in Paris; after he was discharged in 1945, he took the opportunity to study at the École des Beaux-Arts. During this time, he began experimenting with abstract imagery. By the late 1940s, he had systematically reduced traditional imagery into simple, flat, colored, and patterned shapes. In 1959, curator Jules Langsner selected Hammersley to be one of the artists in the Four Abstract Classicists exhibition.
