(1929–1993)

Untitled proof 5 from Arches National Park
1986

Etching
28.75 x 39.5 in.

Born in Chicago, Illinois in 1929, Smith studied painting, sculpture, and printmaking. An incredibly sensitive intaglio artist, Smith taught and traveled broadly before joining the faculty of USU in 1977 and thus had opportunities to study landscapes across Europe and the US. His Utah scenes demonstrate a fascination with bright desert light. Here, he depicts the delicate span of Landscape Arch dissolving into a lemonade sky.
