Robert Berry was born in New York City in 1936. Barry studied art at Hunter College in New York City and received both his BA and MA. He is best known for his word art, using different materials to create what appear to be random words, however, the work is an attempt to suggest a personal relationship between the viewer and each individual word.

Berry works in a variety of media including film, marble, metal, steel, and gold. He was influenced greatly by conceptual art of the 1960’s and is regarded by many as a conceptual artist, but he rejects this categorization. Berry views his work as having a strong conceptual element but that it is up for the viewer to deal witht heir content.
