Untitled
Date Unknown

Stoneware
13.5 x 7 x 6 in.
Gift of Richard W. Gold from the Arthur J. Williams Collection
2024.12.46

At first glance, Untitled appears to be a naturalistic composition. However, the human head emerging from the base of the branch and the unusual color palette challenge the viewer’s perception. Nature and civilization are united in a symbolic and complex relationship, one that, like the branch itself, can be reinterpreted at any moment. Untitled is hand-build and press-molded, adorned with silver leaf and glaze. Ted Vogel often employed a variety of materials in his works, particularly glass, to achieve his artistic vision.

Vogel is a ceramic artist and educator who passed away in 2019. He earned a bachelor's degree from the University of South Dakota in 1980 and a Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Colorado, Boulder in 1984. He served as Associate Professor of Art at Lewis & Clark College from 1994 until his retirement in 2019. He was a resident artist at prestigious institutions, including the Archie Bray Foundation for the Ceramic Arts in Helena, Montana, and the Zentrum für Keramik in Berlin.
