Clark’s artmaking is centered on communicating African American experiences, culture, and identity, particularly through painting dance scenes and portraiture. Having traveled extensively through Africa and the Caribbean, Clark sought to combine native African art styles with those of modern African American artists as a way to help African Americans connect with their ancestry. Clark was known for painting in bright colors, using only a palette knife, a practice he took up when he was living in poverty and unable to afford paint brushes.
