A trained painter, DeFeo is notable for experimenting with a variety of materials and media such as paint, sculpture, collage, and photography. In her work, DeFeo focused on the physical nature of artmaking and created works that were physically intensive. DeFeo’s earlier works never followed a consistent theme, as she was constantly changing her style based on inspiration from her trips through Europe, Asia, and Africa.
