Entirely made out of salt, Trousseau #2 represents Pan Gazale’s exploration of salt as a sculptural material. Crediting her interest to salt to a documentary she watched about the Middle Eastern Salt Traders, Gazale was drawn to the religious, medicinal and symbolism contained in salt. By manipulating salt into soft, fabric like structures in Trousseau #2, Gazale creates illusioned comfort in the eye of the viewer. By creating intimate everyday objects out of salt, Gazale creates discussion surrounding the value of objects we take for granted, pairing it with the historical monetary value of salt. Trousseau #2 represents seven stacked pillows representing the seven days in a week. By stacking the pillows, Gazale creates literal and symbolic layering in the figurative definition of the piece.
