Young was a nationally renowned sculptor, painter, and grandson of Latter-day Saint Prophet Brigham Young. A descendant of pioneer settlers, Young was interested in depicting the labor of frontier men and women. This etching emphasizes women’s contributions to frontier life: both Young’s mother and maternal grandmother were young widows who provided for their families independently.
