At age 20, Zornes hitchhiked across the US from California to New York. Two years later he was back in California to study watercolor at the Otis Art Institute and Scripps College with well-known artist Millard Sheets. Through Sheets, Zornes became involved with the California Scene Painters, a group of artists who embraced regionalist depictions of Southern California. The quiet intimacy of Zornes’ painting, and its unidentified location, reflect the regionalists’ desire to depict everyday landscapes.
