William Jensen Parkinson

American
(1899–1993)

Sugar Loaf Rock
Date unknown

Oil on board
29.25 x 35 x 1.75 in.
Museum Permanent Collection
1984.624

Like Larsen’s Y Mountain, also in this gallery, Parkinson chose to show an iconic Utah peak without its human interventions. A series of squabbles between graduating classes of the Dixie Stake Academy between 1913 and 1915 lead to the painting of “Dixie” across the rock. Parkinson chooses to omit both the word and any suggestion of the surrounding town, focusing instead on the natural beauty of the site.
