Doug Casebeer’s Story Jar is a wheel-thrown stoneware vessel manipulated by indenting the sides of the pot while the clay is still soft and malleable. This imparts a loose and expressive quality to the artist’s work while providing surface texture and sculptural presence. In Story Jar Casebeer has added slabs of textured clay to the sides of the pot, as well as to the lid to form the knob. The piece has been fired with a single glaze that, when applied in differing thicknesses, breaks the composition into three distinct layers of blue-green color, with brush strokes of underglaze painted beneath.
