Rook Tile, which depicts a blue rook on a geometric background, was made in 1929 by Rookwood Pottery. It is part of the Whitman Rook Series, which is still produced today. Rookwood’s architectural tile line began in 1902 and was immediately successful, leading to large orders, from the New York subway system and prominent hotels.

Founded in 1880 by Maria Longworth Nichols Storer in Cincinnati, Rookwood Pottery became a pioneering force in American ceramics and one of the first manufacturing companies owned by a woman. Storer played a fundamental role in the company’s success, hiring talented artists, both women and men, such as the Japanese ceramicist Kataro Shirayamadani. Rookwood earned numerous awards and expanded its production to include architectural pottery. The company continued to grow, gaining international recognition for its innovative glazes and exceptional craftsmanship, and became one of the most famous potteries of the American art pottery movement.
However, the impact of the Great Depression led to its bankruptcy in 1941. Over the following decades, Rookwood changed ownership multiple times and was relocated, but it ultimately ceased operations in 1967. In 2006, Rookwood Pottery Company was revived in Cincinnati.
