Very few Utah artists embraced abstract modernist painting, but this work by Irene gestures towards Cubism with her use of sharp angles and shard-like shapes. Irene may also have been influenced by the New York Ashcan school of painting in her choice of a muted, grey palette and unlovely urban scene. The work is an outlier in her oeuvre, both in terms of content and style.
