John Valadez is frequently referred to as a realist painter. Bordering on photorealism, the Angelino nevertheless adds a dreamlike factor in his works. Pobrecito is feverish to the point of near-illegibility, partly inspired by the frenetic environment of downtown Los Angeles in the 1980s. The “pobrecito” is simultaneously chided and pitied for their perceived deficiencies, presented as a blur of figures purveying violence, humiliation, and despair.
