Higgins gained national renown in the first half of the nineteenth century for his humanitarian depictions of the poor and downtrodden. Despite showing hardship, his images were viewed as romantic because they emphasized emotion and rugged individualism. Pioneers Resting shows one family pressing forward, their eyes fixed on the ground, they pass another family resting along the trail.
