After graduating from BYU in 1905, Calvin spent two years studying in New York, Chicago, London, and Paris. Traveling expanded both his technical skill and knowledge of European trends. When he returned to the United States and took up a teaching position at Utah Agricultural College (now Utah State) in 1907, he brought with him an admiration for the European modernists Monet, Renoir, Cezanne, and Van Gogh.
