This vessel exemplify signature features of Edward Eberle's work including influences from ancient Greek pottery. This bowl is adorned with a design reminiscent of a chessboard, encircled by a snake-like motif. Eberle’s decorations are typically created using terra sigillata painting and sgraffito techniques on porcelain.

Born in Tarentum, Pennsylvania, in 1944, Edward S. Eberle earned a bachelor’s degree from Edinboro State College, Pennsylvania, in 1967 and a Master of Fine Arts degree from the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University, New York, in 1972. From the mid-1970s until 1985 Eberle taught at the Philadelphia College of Art and Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, before dedicating himself fully to studio art. Eberle passed away in 2023.
