A prolific watercolorist, Naegle was born in Toquerville, Utah in 1938 and received an MFA from USU in 1969. Although he subsequently left Utah to teach in Arkansas and Wyoming, the shabby Victorian home in this painting is reminiscent of Utah architecture from the turn of the twentieth century. Because Naegle chose not to include traces of modern life—cars, toys, electronics, or other domestic paraphernalia—the scene feels like a portal to the past.
