Although British-born, Miller evokes the American ambition to stretch the country from “sea to shining sea” in this depiction of the Big Sur coastline. Tucked among the rugged rock cliffs of the Pacific coast, the image shows Notley’s Landing, a hamlet first settled in 1894, but now long abandoned. Although most of the buildings have been dismantled, the landscape is now preserved by the Big Sur Land Trust and can still be seen from Highway 1.
