Virginia Lowden’s Jar exhibits the hallmarks of the ceramic tradition of the Acoma Pueblo peoples: a gray clay body covered in a white slip, then decorated with geometric motifs. Her use of black, orange, and cream-colored pigments creates a vibrant design. Lowden uses a brush made from the yucca plant to apply the decoration, with pigments harvested from natural materials in the local environment. She primarily produced polychrome jars, as seen here, but also experimented with figural imagery.
