Upon their arrival, settlers in Utah established irrigation canals and the canals became the state’s first utility. As a land-grant university, USU has the oldest and one of the largest water research facilities in the U.S. and is internationally recognized as a leader in the field. The foundation for this program was former USU President John A. Widtsoe’s groundbreaking text The Principles of Irrigation Practice (1914). The USU Water Research Laboratory recently celebrated its 50th anniversary and the USU Water Quality Extension continues to provide educational resources about the quality of water and its connection to the land.
