Almost 20 years Calvin’s senior, Harwood was one of the first Utah artists to study in Paris and the first to show at the Paris Salon in 1892. Harwood’s refined Impressionist style developed through frequent trips to Europe and became immensely popular among the Salt Lake City intelligentsia at the turn of the twentieth century. The public’s broad admiration for Harwood’s Impressionism made the Fletcher’s more modernist forms seem all the more transgressive, but the two artists bore no ill will.
