Designated an “All-American Road,” California’s State Route 1 runs from Mendocino County in the north to Orange County in the south, crossing the Golden Gate Bridge and traveling through Big Sur. In Gilpin’s photograph, the shimmering surface of the highway as it snakes through the rocky coastline echoes the organic textures of the ocean waves and suggests the mythical draw of the West.
