Thomas Akawie often created works filled with rigidly symmetrical forms and meticulously crafted images. Initially inspired by the architecture of historic European cathedrals, Akawie painted airbrushed floorplans set against subtly textured backgrounds, as seen in Frauenkirche 2.

Born in New York City in 1935, Akawie pursued his Bachelors of Art at the University of California, Berkeley, completing it in 1953. He continued his education at Berkeley, receiving his Masters of Art in 1963. Following his graduation and simultaneous to his first exhibitions, Akawie worked as an Instructor, Assistant Professor and Professor of Fine Art at the University of California, Berkeley, California State University, Los Angeles and the San Francisco Art Institute from 1966-1999.
