Conrad Schwiering

American
(1916–1986)

Easing 'em Home
1982

Lithograph
24 x 32.25 in.
Gift of Royce Till
1985.16

Raised in Laramie, Wyoming, Schwiering set up a gallery in Jackson Hole in 1947 after returning from his service in World War II. Views of the Tetons and cowboy pictures, like this one, were among his most common subjects. This lithograph shows cowboys leading their herd through a river ford on their annual trek from their summer grazing pastures in the higher elevations to the valley ranches. The long work of the cattle drive provided opportunities for generating and retelling poems, tall tales, and cowboy songs.
