The founder of this museum, Nora Eccles Treadwell Harrison, is a relatively unknown figure in the history of ceramics in the United States, and yet her impact was immense. Though all of her work is small in scale, Bowl reflects her developing skills. This blue bowl is very basic; it is a standard but timid form, with a sturdy dark stoneware clay body, and an attempt at some surface decoration.

Nora Eccles, who preferred to be called “Noni,” came from one of the wealthiest families in Utah. Raised in Logan, she was the sixth of nine children of pioneer industrialist David Eccles's second wife. She attended college in New York City, Los Angeles, Berkeley and Logan, ultimately majoring in psychology. In 1926, she married Walt Treadwell, a photographer and filmmaker. Treadwell’s commitment to ceramics was extensive.
