One can almost smell the sage brush and feel the dry, dusty air of this desert scene. Cope does not identify a location for this work, but it was likely based on Utah’s central desert. Cope was born in Salt Lake City and painted alongside many prominent Utah artists, including LeConte Stewart. Although he eventually settled in San Francisco, Cope is best known for his Utah landscapes, often depicting little-known places, like Bluff.
