Brad Schwieger is known for his hefty, highly altered wheel-thrown stoneware vessel forms, and, in the case of Black House Structure, his massive handbuilt sculpture. For his wheel work, pieces are cut, stretched, stacked, twisted, and reassembled, resulting in slightly asymmetrical objects. Though this sculpture looks casual, it is soundly constructed. Stark in its architectural form, the offhand edges give it a playful quality. Schwieger says, “Form is the most essential element in my work. My secondary focus is to develop different types of surfaces that will enhance and support the form.”
