Stackpole was among the artists Calvin brought to USAC as part of his summer visiting artists’ program, and one of the few sculptors to participate. Like Fletcher, Stackpole studied in Paris, where he befriended Diego Rivera and other prominent modernists. While primarily known for his public sculpture—including major commissions for the Panama-Pacific Exhibition (1915) and Golden Gate International Exhibition (1939) --Stackpole was also a gifted painter.
