In 1940, Lee visited Utah on assignment from the Farm Security Administration, whose cadre of photographers were charged with documenting and combating rural poverty during the Great Depression. His tour of the state took him through Cache and Box Elder Counties where Lee photographed cooperative farms. The cooperative model had been employed in the area since the 1860s but expanded during the Great Depression. As captured in this photograph, even the very young pitched in to help with the work.
