This snapshot of a young woman threading a needle exemplifies the gendered roles and division of labor in agriculture. Women participated in domestic chores such as preparing and preserving food, sewing and mending clothes and linens, and tending the garden while men conducted field tasks like animal husbandry, cultivating soil, growing and harvesting crops, and using farm machinery as needed. Today, these gendered roles are frequently studied by sociologists, agricultural economists, and historians in relation to the social structure of agrarian communities.
