During the 1930s, the federal government commissioned artists across the country to paint murals for public buildings as part of the New Deal. This push sparked broad interest in public art, especially murals, throughout the United States. Although not a New Deal commission, Irene’s mural for the Logan City Library was completed with state funding and includes familiar themes, including labor and industry, regional history, and American folklore. This painting was on display in Logan library buildings for nearly 90 years, from 1934 to 2022. While Irene chose vignettes that reflect a broad range of American juvenile literature, her depictions sometimes accentuate features that embrace racial stereotypes and reflect the prejudices of the time.
