An Artist Called of God (Big Black)
1959

Oil on board
25 x 37.25 in.
Courtesy of the Springville Museum of Art

Dale was unafraid of bold experimentation. During the 1950s, he gravitated towards Abstract Expressionism, a style then popular in New York, but which never gained broad traction among Utah artists. This piece was inspired by an experience Dale had while reading the Biblical account of the construction of the Jewish tabernacle in Exodus 31. The story names Aholiab as an “artist called of God” to craft the objects needed for the tabernacle. Dale felt drawn to this story as an account of the spiritual value of artistic labor. This piece also demonstrates his connections to the Art & Belief Movement, a group of young LDS artists who sought to express religious faith through Modernist Art in the 1960s and 1970s.
