Of the three Fletcher artists, Dale’s work most overtly dialogued with religion and ideas about the divine. In 1978, he left his teaching position at Brigham Young University to pursue the Cult of Pyramidology, a group that studied the mystical and prophetic qualities of pyramids. After painting An Artist Called of God, Dale shifted towards creating works that interrogated the nature of God. In keeping with this preoccupation, this painting is rife with religious symbolism. The gold square in the middle of the figure’s chest represents the Holy of Holies, a room in ancient Hebrew temples. In the bottom left, the rainbow is a sign of the divine covenant in Judeo Christian traditions. Repeated triangle motifs and precise symmetry reflect Dale’s fascination with pyramids and the Christian Trinity.
