Calvin painted human subjects less often than Irene, so this portrait of Irene sketching feels particularly intimate. It was completed in the year following the couple’s December 1926 wedding, which may explain the tenderness of the scene. As a family, the Fletchers often painted one another; this gallery also includes several of Irene’s depictions of Dale.
