Irene came of age as an artist in the years just prior to the Great Depression and the subsequent emergence of New Deal art. Laid Off is characteristic of many New Deal-era paintings, providing an empathetic portrait of a downtrodden American laborer, emphasizing the subject’s internal psychology. Creating in the vein of other New Deal artists, like the well-known photographer Dorothea Lange and Maynard Dixon, Irene highlights the sensitive nature of mass unemployment.
