First Vision
1961-62

Oil on canvas
49.25 x 43 in.
Courtesy of Ron Jenkins

Not one to depict episodes in Latter -day Saint history with regularity, this version of church founder Joseph Smith’s First Vision was commissioned by the LDS church. The artist used his then 14-year-old grandson, Ronald Jenkins, as the model for the 14-year-old Smith. Unfortunately, Calvin passed away before completing the work on June 1, 1963, at the age of 80. The patches of brilliant cobalt blue in the trees and in Joseph Smith’s shadow reveal how Calvin’s inventive approach to painting endured to the very end.
