Zweifel’s Teapot Set #68 (Cactus) is a contemporary interpretation of a classic ceramic form. Using the factory production method of slip casting, Zweifel used live pieces of cactus to create a realistic, yet whimsical teapot set. The realism of the cactus plant is transformed into handles, a spout, cups, and saucers. Teapot Set #68 (Cactus) is part of a larger creative reimagining of the form of the teapot by ceramic artists in the 1980s who broke away from the rigid rules of the vessel tradition. Zweifel experimented widely with the slip casting method—preferring objects and plants found in the deserts of the Southwest.

David Zweifel received his Bachelor of Arts in Studio Art from Humboldt State University, an important craft center in northern California, in 1974. He continued his education at the University of Arizona, where he became enchanted with the desert landscape. He completed his Master of Fine Arts in 1976.
